What Is Cyber Essentials, and Does Your Business Need It?

A UK government-backed certification that checks five basic controls — useful as a baseline whether or not a client or contract requires it.

Cyber Essentials comes up in two very different contexts: as a genuine requirement for winning certain contracts, and as a useful checkpoint for businesses who simply want to know their basic security is in order. Both are valid reasons to look into it.

What Cyber Essentials Actually Checks

Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed certification scheme that assesses five technical control areas:

  • Firewalls, configured properly at the network boundary
  • Secure configuration of devices and software
  • User access control, so people only have the access they need
  • Malware protection across devices
  • Patch management, keeping software up to date

These are deliberately the fundamentals, not advanced enterprise security — the idea is a baseline every business should have in place, regardless of size.

Self-Assessment vs Cyber Essentials Plus

The standard version is a self-assessment questionnaire, verified by an external assessor, covering the controls above. Cyber Essentials Plus adds an independent technical audit — someone actually testing your systems rather than taking the questionnaire answers on trust. Plus typically takes longer and costs more, but carries more weight, particularly for contracts that specifically require it.

Does a Small Business Actually Need It?

If you're bidding for public sector contracts, or work with larger clients who require suppliers to hold it, the answer is straightforwardly yes — it's often a contractual requirement rather than a choice. Outside of that, it's not legally required for most small businesses, but the five controls it checks are ones any business handling customer data, financial information or email should have in place regardless. Many businesses find that pursuing certification is a useful forcing function for actually implementing security they should have anyway.

What This Looks Like at REONEX

REONEX can help prepare businesses for Cyber Essentials certification as part of a wider cyber security setup, reviewing what's already in place and closing the gaps that would otherwise trip up an assessment.
